Camponotus lateralis is an attractive bicoloured carpenter ant from the Mediterranean region, monogynous and polymorphic (with major workers). A wood-dwelling, xerophilous species with rather slow development, it forms colonies of moderate size.

Geographic distribution: Mediterranean region / Southern Europe
Origin: Southern France
-Queen size: 7-10mm
-Worker size: 3-7mm (polymorphic, majors present)
-Polygynous: no (monogynous)
-Mature colony size: around 2,000 workers

 

Maintenance information:
Humidity: 10-15% (xerophilous species, keep the nest dry)
Temperature: 22-27°C (ideal at 26°C)
Diapause: Yes (mandatory, 10-15°C for about 3 months)
Nests: Any nest suits them (prefer a dry nest)
Food: insects, sugary liquids
